On Johns Island, just outside Charleston, South Carolina, stands the Angel Oak, an extraordinary Southern live oak estimated to be 300–400 years old. At about 65 feet high, the tree is remarkable for its extraordinary horizontal reach and mass of its limbs. Its trunk measures approximately 25.5 feet in circumference, and its sprawling canopy casts roughly 17,000 square feet of shade. One of its great limbs alone is reported to extend 89 feet. A “Lowcountry Treasure,” the Angel Oak tree now receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
